TESSIE

Our blue-eyed beauty, Tessie, is a subdued, gentle girl, who just joined us from a rural shelter where she and her sister, Frostie, were surrendered by owners who could no longer care for them. Just two years old, Tessie begins the next chapter of her life, which holds the promise of a much better tomorrow.

Tessie is an interesting mix of Beagle and Catahoula Leopard dog. The Catahoula's large stature is offset by Tessie's beagle DNA, and the blend has created a 30 pound dog, who is athletic, yet easy to handle. One of Tessie's most striking features are her liquid ice blue eyes, that are characteristic of some Catahoulas. Tessie's coat is a myriad of pattern and color, but the unmistakable "leopard spots" can be discerned across her back. Her salt and pepper markings are overlayed onto the classic Beagle tricolor pattern. Tessie's coat is short and requires minimal grooming.

At first glance, Tessie gives the appearance of aloofness, but in short order, strangers are greeted with a friendly nudge for loving touch. Tessie is slightly more laid back than her sister Frostie; however, her breed roots are clearly working dog, so Tessie needs productive activity, as well as love and affection to be happy. As a scent hound, Tessie is intrigued by the smells of nature, and loves to keep her nose to the ground during daily walks. Adopters who are fairly active should be able to meet Tessie's exercise and training needs.

Focused play and consistent obedience training are the best rule of thumb for channeling working dog instincts. Tessie has begun her Canine Good Citizenship training, and has grasped the basics beautifully. She is a well socialized, friendly dog, who is eager to please and poised to reach CGC certification in short order.

Tessie would be a wonderful family dog for a family with older children, who have been taught how to interact with a gentle dog. She and Frostie have been socialized separately, so that they can be adopted to separate homes. Tessie enjoys other dogs, and is used to living in a large dog pack. She could easily join a multi-dog home, and would likely do well with dog savvy cats.

Tessie has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect the occasional accident as she transitions to a new home. Tessie is in excellent health, and has been spayed. Tessie is vaccinated for rabies, parvo, adrenovirus, distemper, coronavirus, leptopirosis, canine influenza, and bordatella. She has been dewormed, and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
