WIZ

If ever, oh ever, a Wiz there was, our Wizard of Oz is one because... because of the wonderful dog he is....and, we're OFF to meet the Wizard! Ok, it had to be said...given our predilection for classic film icons.

Notwithstanding...our little Wiz is a dreamboat dog. A year and a half old, Wizzy was found as a stray in a busy urban neighborhood, where he met up with the dogcatcher and was transported promptly to the pound. He had an uneventful stay, and then was released to us because we could not resist those big brown eyes!

Wizzy appears to be a beautiful mix of Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Pug -- but we'd say Corgi is the dominant breed. His stature is very Corgi - like with short legs and an elongated spine, but the Pug influence has added some muscular strength to his form. Wizzy has an adorable plume tail and floppy ears, in addition to a scrumptious chocolate brown coat with black facial markings. His coat is in fantastic shape; he is soft and low shedding.

This little guy has just about as perfect a temperament as we can imagine. He was sorely tested the other day as we were stranded on the New Jersey Turnpike with a defunct fuel pump waiting on Emergency Tow services. The process of getting the SUV towed back to Rhode Island was a seven and a half hour roller coaster ride with Mad Max...from Thunderdome...behind the tow truck wheel.

And, as I rode in the cab with my Alpha Bitch, Shiloh, and our Wiz, I was grateful to Wizzy for being the rock, the bastion of common sense, the pillar of strength in this full blown catastrophe. In the face of complete chaos, our Wizzy was calm and sweet as can be, and completely charmed our Tow Truck Driver.

Few rescue dogs would restrain themselves in this situation fraught with triggers. We found ourselves grateful that we hadn't brought a few of the other more "reactive" rescue dogs. Having passed his "temperament" test with flying colors, we think that Wizzy would be a fantastic family dog, or companion for first time dog owners.

Wizzy is friendly, and loving, while staying calm and quiet. He is appreciative of all human attention, and loves all people and kids. He is a laid back dog, and not likely to react to the histrionics of spirited kids or spirited cats. He has a 'live and let live' vibe that will fit into just about any type of situation.

Wizzy has had no formal obedience training, and we recommend classes to help cement the adopter/dog bond, and to provide the structure and discipline that rescue dogs need to guide them on the road to good Canine Citizenship. Wizzy would excel in obedience work and would be the class star.

Wizzy is in excellent health, and is at an ideal 20 pound weight. He is a small dog, but gives the impression of strength and power. He has been neutered as well as vaccinated for rabies, parvo/distemper and bordatella. He has been microchipped and de-wormed, and has tested negative for heartworm/lyme/earlichia/anaplasmosis.
