ADOPTED

WINSTON

Some lucky family is going to have the time of lives with our adorable puppy, Winston. He recently came to us from a small country shelter in Virginia, after local Animal Control Officers found him on the run. During his time at the shelter, Winston appeared frightened and shy. He had the aura of a depressed dog that was unsure of his surroundings and of his future.

Winston caught the eye of one of our rescue friends, who immediately contacted us to help him. We were thrilled to invite Winston to Connecticut, and he has settled into foster care beautifully. Winston has really blossomed and shown us that dopey puppy personality that will tickle the fancy of an active family, who are all on the same page about raising an older puppy. Winston is now one year old, and has that gangly, rangy look of young dog not yet in full command of his feet. He is a tall, leggy dog, with an atheletic build. He is quite fast and loves to run. At 43 pounds, Winston is slightly underweight, and he could easily to fill out to 45 to 50 pounds.

Shelter staff described Winston as a Staffie, although he bears no real resemblance to that breed standard. We believe him to be a Border Collie mixed with some Labrador Retriever. He has a very athletic physique, and a black and white color pattern with some speckling, that suggests a Border Collie look. Winston has the square head and floppy ears of the Lab, and while he is an energetic, athletic dog, he seems less high strung than some of his Border Collie bretheren.

Winston's personality seems more in sync with the Labrador breed standard, and he has the delightful personality of a genial family dog. His nature is sweet and loving, and he is not likely to play favorites in a family dynamic. Winston is very kid friendly and touchable. He craves human attention and would enjoy interacting with older children and being part of a large family.

The greatest challenge with Winston, is shepherding him through his adolescent stage, and continuing him on a solid regimen of exercise and obedience. He is past the teething stage, and has not proven himself to be overly destructive, but folks who take on a young dog must be prepared to puppy proof the premises and have realistic expectations of his limitations as far as house training and unsupervised time at home alone.

Winston is extremely smart and has begun to grasp the concepts of basic obedience training. He is a dog who could go the full route to Canine Good Citizenship certification, and become a well trained family member, who is welcomed everywhere. His temperament is outstanding, he is extremely friendly to everyone he meets. He has demonstrated no issues with other dogs. We think he may fit into a feline home, although a young pup would likely chase cats in play.

Winston has decent house manners for a youngster, and is mostly house trained and nicely crate trained. Adopters must expect to finetune his potty routine, as he transitions to his new home. Winston is in excellent health, and has been neutered. He had one of the best Vet reactions of any dog we've had recently, as he cajoled his way through the poke and prod routine. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DA2PP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, and coronavirus). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, earlichia and anaplasmosis. Upon leaving the Virginia shelter he was diagnosed with Lyme, and has been treated with a 28-day course of antibiotic. Our vet does not expect future complications. He has been treated for intestional parasites. If you are interested in Winston, please write to Denise@eskiesonline.com or call Denise at 860-908-9738 for more info.
