SARGENT

Our gorgeous Sargent will be a pot 'o gold for the right folks.  He came to us from NYCACC, where his owner left him at just 6 months old, after giving up on the rigors of raising a young pup. Sargent showed all the signs of a shy youngster who had left his pack too soon. He wound up with clueless owners who neglected his training and social behavior.

We loved Sargent from the moment we met him, despite shelter comments that he is suspicious of some strangers.  He warmed to us slowly, and seemed to rejoice in freedom from shelter life.  We were able to socialize him with other dogs, and soon he became a superstar in our big dog playgroup.  He takes his cues from other dogs nicely and seems to follow their lead.

Sargent is a stunning looking character, with a slight sadness to his demeanor.  He is a mix of German Shepherd and Alaskan Husky, recently verified by DNA Testing. He has a tri-color coat blending the black, smoky brown and white hues found in both breeds.  His soft, thick coat is lustrous to touch and requires regular brushing.  He will likely "blow his coat" in spring and fall. We see a hint of the Husky mask and plume tail, as well as the proud German Shepherd stance and fortitude.

Sargent would be the ideal companion to an active single or couple who have large dog experience. At 50 pounds, he is a strong, energetic fellow, who requires at least a couple of brisk leash walks each day, but would thrive as a walking, running or hiking companion.  He could easily join a multi-dog home with other well trained dogs.  Since he has been with us, Sargent has been quite sociable and has enjoyed contact with other dogs. We have not had him around cats.

Sargent is an affectionate dog, once he warms up.  He's not the kind of dog who is going to be happy, relegated to a backyard, and left alone for hours on end. This lack of activity would be a prescription for mischief.  Sargent has now redicovered his inner puppy, and he loves to play. He enjoys human touch and allows handling from people that he knows, but sometimes will shy away from strangers.  Adopters should be prepared to ask strangers to allow Sargent to get to know them slowly.  It's unlikely that he would relish a stranger's overzealous bear hug.

Sargent is a smart dog, and has Working Dog DNA.  He needs mental stimulation as well as a good physical workout each day. Obedience training is the ideal activity to challenge Sargent in mind and body.  He responds well to positive reinforcement and leadership training techniques. Sargent knows all of his basic commands. Adopters should be able to handle him with ease right from the beginning.

Sargent has good house manners, and is mostly house trained and crate trained.  Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home.  Sargent is in excellent health, and is at an ideal lean body weight of 50 pounds.  He is not a fan of the Vet's office. Adopters should be prepared to muzzle him before the exam, and ask for experienced Vet Tech support.

Sargent has been neutered, and has received routine vaccinations and health screenings. He has been dewormed, and and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick. If you are interested in Sargent, please email Denise at Angelsfrgod@aol.com, or text 860-908-9738 for an adoption application.
