PETEY

Our handsome Petey is quite an adorable character. He came to us with his housemate, Stella, as part of an "informal" breeding operation. Petey's owners dumped both dogs into NYC ACC, where they received rave behavior evaluations, but contracted the shelter sniffles, and were deemed unsuitable for adoption. They joined us for a little R&R and a healthy dose of antibiotics. Stella has been adopted already, and now it's Petey turn.

It's a shocker that a swell fella like Petey should wind up homeless and alone at the age of just five. Shelter staff pegged him as an Jack Russell Terrier, and we think that he favors the Irish version of JRT, in his stocky, short stature. Petey has somewhat petite features for the breed, and is a pint sized, sturdy dog at 10 pounds. His short, smooth coat is all white with strategically placed patches of carmel brown.

Frankly, Petey is quite gentlemanly and well-mannered for a JRT. He doesn't have the over-the-top frantic energy that we see in some of his compatriots. Instead, Petey approaches cautiously and waits for an invitation to snuggle in his person's lap. He is an affectionate boy, who bonds quickly, once he trusts.

Petey would be a great choice for an active single or couple who enjoy an energetic Terrier type dog. He would be an enthusiastic companion on walks or hikes, and he loves to travel, and be part of the action. Petey could also join an active family with older kids, as long as everyone can commit to his training and exercise schedule. The key to Petey is adequate exercise and mental stimulation to keep him from wallowing in the boredom and frustration that leads to behavior problems.

Petey is a social boy, and could easily join a home with other well trained, energetic dogs. We have not exposed him to cats, but the terrier-cat vibe is a well known dicey commodity, although Petey is more likely than most to coexist well in a feline home. He has begun to grasp the basics of leadership and obedience work, and has passed a few of the Canine Good Citizen tests. Petey has the potential to excel in this program.

Petey is in excellent health, and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
