KEATS

Our adorable Keats, named after one of our favorite Romantic Poets, is a happy-go-lucky fellow, who is content to snuggle up in his special person's lap. Seven years old, Keats' owners gave up on him. They gave no particular reason, just dumped him off at the NYC ACC. As an owner surrendered dog, Keats had only have 48 hours to impress shelter staff and volunteers to start networking with rescue on his behalf, before he was eligible for euthanasia. Certainly such a lovely little boy deserves better.

Keats has that peppy effervescence that Terrier Lovers cherish. He is an extremely good natured dog, and has earned rave behavior evaluations. He made a seamless transition to foster care, and seems to treat every change as an exciting new adventure. Keats appears to be a mix of Yorkshire Terrier and Chocolate Affenpinscher, two energetic, feisty Terrier breeds. The Affenpinscher DNA adds work ethic to Keats' aristocratic Yorkie roots, and seems to ensure that he doesn't take himself too seriously. This dog has a dynamite sense of humor, and always seems to be giving an ear-to-ear grin. He is a great lap dog, but will manage to get into folks' buisness as much as he can. This sweet little guy loves absolutely everyone, and the more attention he gets the better he likes it.

Keats is tiny guy at just 11 pounds. He has the wiry Affenpinscher coat, in a reddish brown shade, with some tan markings. He doesn't appear to shed much, and has a lanky frame that looks like he could put on a pound or two. He's very well behaved, and tolerates a lot of handling, so grooming should be a breeze.

Keats has that one in a million temperament that makes him an ideal family dog. He could easily join a home with older kids, who are used to handling small dogs, or he could join the active lifestyle of a single, couple, or recent retiree. He does well with all dogs, and would also do well with cats. Keats loves attention, and doesn't require a lot of exercise. A couple of leisurely leash walks each day, in addition to frequent potty breaks should do the trick.

Keats is in great health, and has a lot of good years ahead of him. Our vet places him in the 7 to 8 year range based on his teeth and some early changes to his eyes. He has been neutered, and has had a complete dental procedure, but did not lose any teeth. His preoperative blood work was all within normal limits, and he has responded well to the nutritional program that we have administered.

Keats has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home. He has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus), and canine flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, and microchipped.
