HAWKEYEHawkeye is one of the most majestic creatures we have ever laid eyes on. This stunning three year old Alaskan Malamute is a sage old soul who is smarter than most rocket scientists we know. He reminds us of the kind of trusted companion that an Alaskan Inuit Native would have as a best friend and mushing team Navigator. |
Hawkeye is not for the faint hearted dog owner. He is a magnificent Alpha Male who needs to respect, as well as trust, his handler. There is some neglect and abuse in Hawkeye's past. It's a familiar story: An eighteen year old young man purchased Hawkeye as a Valentine's gift for his seventeen year old girlfriend. What a gag gift indeed! When you are in the throes of puppy love, an actual live puppy can provide the sort of impressive "Disney" panache that such a romantic holiday needs. From our current perspective, it's hard to imagine the 10 pound ball of fluff who morphed into 80 pound Hawkeye. We'd like to have a sit down with whomever sold these kids a Malamute puppy. |
And so, our Hawkeye grew into an exhuberant adult male, whose training and exercise needs were ignored completely. He spent 20 maddening hours a day in a small crate, while his owners went about their lives. At some point, the darling couple broke up, and the young man was left with Hawkeye, who became a bitter reminder of faded young love. Hawkeye has a much greater destiny in store for him. He came to our rescue through a groomer friend, who learned that Hawkeye's young owner was trying to get rid of him through nefarious channels. We were thrilled to have him, and immediately began to rehabilitate his wounded spirit. |
Hawkeye is the ultimate companion dog for a seasoned Northern Breed lover who has a lot of time to spend with him. Like most robust Northern breeds, Hawkeye loves the outdoors and has a touch of wanderlust. He requires significant exercise, but is amazingly easy to handle on lead. He keeps pace with his handler and doesn't pull excessively. |
Hawkeye would be the perfect choice for a vigorous retiree, who can make him a life priority. Hawkeye has a definite, "I won't be ignored anymore," vibe and will get into mischief if he becomes bored and frustrated. He needs to be connected to his pack, and bond with his special person. |
Hawkeye is generally good with other dogs, but his sheer size can intimidate insecure dogs. Hawkeye is a naturally confident alpha male, who seems to delight in stirring the pot of mayhem amongst the bat crazy pack of Chihuahuas and Min Pins in his foster home. We've giggled at his antics, as he runs laps around the dining room table with a gaggle of tiny ankle biters at his heels, like Gulliver and the Lilliputions. This dog has an impish sense of humor. |
Mostly, Hawkeye enjoys a good nap, and we often find him stretched out on the hardwood floor or curled up in a ball in some unlikely Beagle sized bed. He has appropriated the secondary leather recliner, next to his Foster Dad, and they sit together like Navy drinking buddies, watching reruns of NCIS. |
This dog will be the love of a lifetime for the right adult single or couple, who have the time and patience to devote to him. We have made amazing progress on Canine Good Citizenship training, and he is willing to work for praise and treats. His stranger manners need some work, and, though not aggressive, Hawkeye will occasionally jump up and send the visitor tumbling back. He needs extremely confident handling, and some physical strength to manage. |
Hawkeye is in good health and has been neutered. He is up to date on routine vaccinations, and is heartworm negative. If you are interested in Hawkeye, please write to Denise@eskiesonline.com or call Denise at 720-903-0636 for more info. |
