ADOPTED |
HAPPYDarling Happy is a cute bundle of puppy love. Just 11 months old, this precious boy was surrendered by his owner to a high kill animal control facility in a harsh urban environment. No reason was given. Owner surrendered dogs seem to be a large part of shelter population, and it's frightening to think that these unfortunate family pets have so little time before they are at risk for euthanasia. |
Happy fared pretty well in the shelter. He received excellent behavior evaluations at the vet and in his standard SAFER assessment. Volunteers and shelter staff fell in love with the little guy, and he developed quite a Facebook following. |
As soon as we discovered Happy, we invited him to join our rescue. Shelter experts believe that Happy is a mix of American Eskimo Dog and Pekingese. He has the plush coat and structure of the American Eskimo Dog, but his facial features, floppy, half mast ears, and biscuit patch coloring suggest the Pekingese lineage. Happy has a fairly low maintenance coat for a long-haired dog, without the dense Eskie undercoat. His natural look may require a couple of professional groomings a year, as well as weekly brushing. |
Happy is a confident and versatile little imp. He could easily join an active family, with dog savvy kids, or a multi-dog home. We have not had him around cats, but with proper introduction and supervision, he should be fine. Happy seems adaptable and comfortable in new situations, but may greet the occasional stranger with the characteristic Eskie hullabaloo.

As a spirited youngster, Happy needs folks who are prepared for the rigors of puppy training. Although he has not shown any distructive tendencies, adopters would be wise to puppy proof the premises and use a crate to help him feel secure during this transition. He could be a great activity partner for the active single or couple who enjoy running or hiking, and whose lifestyle allows time for Happy's exercise and training needs. |
Happy, has good house manners, but adopters should have appropriate expectations of a young pup. He is nicely crate trained, but as a recently neutered boy, he will need reinforcing of good potty habits. Happy has not had much obedience training, but he is eager to please and easy to train. He responds nicely to positive rewards and leadership techniques. |
Happy is in excellent health and is neutered. He is vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper and bordatella. He has been microchipped and de-wormed and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
