GORDO

Lucky Gordo had developed a large fan base during his stay at a huge Animal Control facility. The volunteers who met him wrote rave reviews about his sunny disposition and became increasingly concerned as the days passed and he found himself facing certain euthanasia. Gordo had been left to this fate by an owner who cited "personal problems" as his reason for surrender.

Finally, the plea for Gordo's life arrived in our email, along with his shelter mugshot, and we were smitten! Look at those big brown eyes! How in the world could we pass him by? And so, we invited Gordo to join our rescue, and he began his new life with us. We just love this delightful boy. He is an adult dog, age guesstimated to be about 5 to 6 years, based on evaluation of teeth, eyes and energy level. As an adult dog, Gordo is well past the dreaded puppy mayhem and can be trusted not to ravage the furniture and shoe collection.

Gordo is quite the character! He had never been on a leash before, and as soon as we put one on him, he laid down on his ample belly and gave us a puzzled look. After some coaxing, Gordo willingly joined in on the walk, but seems still somewhat mistrustful of the leash apparatus! Adopters will need to work on the leash walk, as well as basic obedience with Gordo. He seems to have skated by in life on his good looks and charm and hasn't been taught any manners.

Nevertheless, Gordo is a pretty easy dog to handle. He is housetrained and crate trained, but he will fuss in his crate a bit if ignored for too long. Gordo loves his people. He is a fantastic companion dog and will blend into any kind of home easily. He has a modest to low energy level, making him an appropriate companion for a mature single or couple who enjoy sharing their lives with a loving dog, who likes a lot of attention. Gordo would do well with a couple of leisurely leash walks each day, as well as lots of couch time with his people.

Gordo is in good health. At 20 pounds, he could stand to lose a couple pounds. He is likely a mix of standard Dachshund and Chihuahua, so his structure features a slightly elongated spine, but the Chihuahua input reduces the likeliness of the back issues that plague purebred Dachshunds. Nonetheless, adopters should keep an eye on Gordo's diet and nutrition so that his weight remains at a healthy level. Gordo can be a bit of a gourmand.

Gordo is neutered and vaccinated for parvo, distemper, bordatella and he is microchipped and de-wormed. He has tested negative for heartworm/lyme/earlichia/anaplasmosis.
