ADOPTED

GARVEY

Our Garvey is a sage old soul who deserves to live his golden years in the lap of luxury and love. At the age of 8 years young, this handsome gentleman was abandoned by his owner to an overcrowded, high kill animal control facility. Since there is no stray hold on owner surrendered dogs, they are relegated quickly to the euthanasia list. Luckily, Garvey had developed quite a fan base online, and he was soon brought to our attention.

Despite good shelter behavior evaluations, Garvey was passed over in the adoption program due to his age. Seems as though everybody wants to experience puppy hell, and too few people appreciate the considerable benefits of having an older dog, who is well past the puppy mayhem stage.

Garvey has a calm and mellow nature, although his shelter experience produced a wee bit of understandable anxiety. He seemed relieved to meet us and leave the harsh shelter environment behind. Garvey adapted to foster care quickly and became affectionate with everyone. He is a gregarious fellow, who has excellent dog pack manners. Despite some reports of Shelter anxiety with other dogs, Garvey was an immediate hit in our big dog play yard. He seemed to navigate all of the social barriers beautifully, and has become a standout in our playgroups. Garvey could easily join a quiet home with one or two well-behaved, calm dogs, who enjoy an occasional romp around the yard. He would also be a wonderful companion for an active senior dog, who may have lost his or her housemate.

Garvey appears to be a mix of two powerful breeds, German Shepherd and Chow Chow. He has the characteristic purple tongue of the Chow Chow, as well as a fluffy coat that requires regular brushing. He is a large, well muscled dog, at an optimal weight of 60 pounds, yet gentle to handle and easy to walk on lead. Garvey is blue-Black in color with distinguished gray in his muzzle. Due to the specific breed mix, we would like to place Garvey in an adult home, so that everyone handling him has some experience with and respect for powerful breeds.

Garvey seems most like a Shepherd in personality, in that he seems to enjoy outdoor activity. He would be a great choice for a moderately active single or couple, a recent retiree or senior. He has a moderate exercise level, and would be a great companion to anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Garvey would be happy with a couple of leisurely to brisk leash walks daily, and a game of frisbee. He could easily do well in an apartment lifestyle, and as an older dog, he can be trusted home alone for short periods of time. Garvey is a pretty good all-around companion dog, and needs to be in an environment where his golden years will be spent as the light of someone's life, rather than considered an afterthought.

Garvey had not had much obedience training, but he has quickly mastered the basics. He has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home. He has been neutered, and has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and Canine Flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
