FELIX

If ever we would like to know a dog's back story, it's Felix's. This athletic stunner came to us from NYC ACC, as an owner surrender, with a full vet record.... from Nassau, Bahamas. How in the world does an 8 month puppy navigate our hinky immigration system from the Bahamas to New York? There has to be a story there.

We guess that Felix was adopted from the Bahamas Humane Society on a vacation whim, and quickly his adopter discovered that Felix did not transition easily from Island life to Manhattan life! This blustery beauty caused quite a stir in the shelter: he became fearful and difficult to handle. He doesn't quite know what to make of the rescue process. Felix seemed slow to adjust to change. The trick with him has been reigniting his puppy mojo.

Felix was just 8 months old when he arrived in New York, and had to face the unwieldy rescue process instead of basking in the security and structure that well-raised puppies receive. Now, in just a short short time, we have been able to redirect Felix's frantic anxiety into a much more confident and calm demeanor. He has blossomed into a dog, who has learned pack manners, and to trust humans.

Felix has the epitome of "puppy dog eyes'" that grab you from from the get-go. At first glance, he appears to be a Golden or Red Fox Retriever mix. He is a large dog, at 50 pounds, and could stand to gain a few pounds as he evolves into an adult dog. He has a spectacular russet red coat with a bit of a fringe to it, and a wide swath of white on his chest, but we were surprised to find webbed toes that reveal his DNA to be Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Hopefully, poor Felix did not have to swim from Nova Scotia to the Bahamas, but if he did, he certainly had the footwear.

As a hardwired hunting dog, Felix is a natural athlete, and has a lean, athletic physique that flourishes with a lot of exercise. This kind of high-energy breed of dog, definitely needs a job. The best way to channel his work ethic is through retrieving exercises and obedience training. Felix loves his training sessions and is extremely eager to please. He responds to both praise and treat motivated positive reinforcement, as well as leadership training techniques.

Felix would be a fabulous choice for an active single or couple who enjoy outdoor activities. The more exercise he gets the better. At home, a relaxed environment would be ideal for Felix, as he can become a little anxious in the face of chaos. He may be spooked by the frantic movements of toddlers, but he would thrive in an active, but laid back family, with older kids, who have been taught to handle a dog gently.

Felix enjoys the company of other friendly dogs, and he has made fast friends with some of our favorite fosters. As an older puppy, Felix can the rambunctious, and sometimes he pushes the boundaries of an older dog in play, so while he could go to a multi-dog home, the other dogs have to have a tolerant energy and play vibe. He would not be a good candidate for a senior dog or feline home.

Adopter's must have appropriate expectations of house manners in an older puppy, who has been through the rescue process. His ideal adopter will be prepared to manage the antics of an older puppy, and continue Felix on a positive reinforcement training program. He is mostly house trained and crate trained, but adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home.

Felix is in excellent health, and has been recently neutered, and has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza, and coronavirus), and canine flu. He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, and microchipped.
