ADOPTED

CHARLIE

Charlie is one of five dogs that we recently took from a large Amish Puppy Mill Farm in scenic Pennsylvania Dutch country. We are one of many rescues recruited by Laura Amato (featured in the HBO Documentary, "Madonna of the Mills," that participate in these large group rescues.

For the past six years, Laura has tirelessly worked to convince "millers" to release their disposable dogs: mating pairs and unsold puppies to rescue for adoption rather than destroy them. euthanasia in the mill world means getting shot or clubbed to death. Laura and her team are responsible for saving thousands of dogs' lives. We stand in awe of her efforts and are privileged to play our small role.

Little Charlie is a real heart breaker. He was tossed onto the transport as an afterthought and had no rescue group lined up to take him. We are always saps for the unwanted "underdogs," so we snagged him. That bewildered, frightened look in his eyes rendered us speechless.

Charlie has had a dubious career as a breeding stud, spending his entire five year life in a filthy, cramped cage, experiencing only the harshest of human touch. His lifestyle was completely sedentary with no play or exercise time. Immediately we noticed that he had little muscle mass in his legs from years of lying in his cage. Also we see a bit of bowing in his legs which has resulted from the same situation. Adopters will need to provide Charlie with a moderate, leisurely leash walking and stair climbing routine to build his strength.

We have found that puppy mill dogs have special psychological needs that set them apart from other rescue dogs. They have no positive connection to humanity and need a special kind of adopter who has the patience to wait for that slow connection to develop. Charlie is slowly blossoming in foster care. He no longer looks like a trauma victim, but he still skeedaddles across the room whenever someone approaches him.

Everyone who has met Charlie has fallen for his sad sack mug like a ton of bricks. I thought our Vet, Dr. Judie, would swoon as she scooped him up and rode him around on her scooter. She is nursing a broken ankle and is four wheelin' these days. Then, one of her vet techs, Christine, fostered Charlie during his recovery from surgery. In a one to one, human/dog situation, Charlie seemed to shine.

Charlie is a bit under weight and malnourished. His pre-op blood work was normal except for evidence of severe dental infection and anemia. We have done extensive dental work and the poor little guy lost 27 teeth. The mind boggles at what must constitute the puppy mill diet that can rot a mouth full of teeth in a dog only five years old. Also, we have treated the anemia, and Charlie is starting to pep up quite a bit. Adopters will need to continue Charlie on a nutritious diet with high quality protein and omega fats.

Charlie will be a grateful, loving companion for the patient single or couple who enjoy the challenge resussitating the broken spirit of a rescue dog. Small victories will provide great thrills.

Charlie is now in good health. He has been neutered and vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper, bordatella and canine influenza. He has been microchipped and de-wormed and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
