CHAMP

Our Champ is a beauty to behold. Our educated guess suggests that he is largely Golden Retriever, with a dose of Brittany Spaniel to explain the petite body frame, and blond "ticking" pattern on his carmel color coat. Champ's coat has a soft wavy texture, along with beautiful leg fringe and a spectacular plume tail. Two years old, Champ was recently surrendered by his daft owner to a high kill animal control facility, where he became agitated and fearful. The vibe in these austere, overcrowded facilities is not conducive to canine peace of mind!

Champ's tender sensibilities were offended, particularly during his vet exam, during which his tuckus was poked and prodded beyond his comfort level. And so, Champ got a bad rap at the vet, but then managed to charm the succession of shelter volunteers who kept him sane on his daily constitutionals. Once Champ joined our rescue, he settled down and began to enjoy life again. He has proven himself to be a most delightful houseguest, and has blended in beautifully with other dogs. Champ would be best suited to an active home, with experienced dog folks, who have some good rescue dog chops.

Champ would be fine with older kids, but we think he'd excel in a serene, relaxed environment without alot of intense activity. He will buddy up nicely to another laid back, balanced dog. Champ loves attention and affection, but he takes some time to warm up. He likes to investigate strangers before giving them the "thumbs up," so folks will need to give Champ his space before overwhelming him with TLC.

Champ is a medium energy dog, who would thrive with a couple of brisk leash walks each day and some focused playtime with his folks. He has good house manners, and is housetrained and crate trained, although, savvy adopters will expect a recently neutered dog to be tempted to mark in a new environment. Champ has had no formal obedience work, but has responded beautifully to the basic routines that we have introduced. In fact, obedience work has proven to be a superb bonding tool for Champ, and he is very eager to please and willing to work for praise or treats. We recommend continued leadership and positive rewards training to bring out Champ's fantastic potential.

Champ is in excellent health and is at a healthy weight of 41 pounds. He has been neutered and is vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper and bordatella. He has been microchipped, de-wormed and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
