BRIANNAI always get a kick out of colloquialisms that have a literal application. Many times, I have used the expression "Oh, it was the LEAST that I could do," when actually, I thought I had done something extremely wonderful and intended to convey that, in fact, I would have done a good deal more. Well, Brianna has a story to tell that literally exemplifies the least that her owners could do. This amazingly sweet and docile five year old Miniature Pinscher was tied to the fence in a Bronx school yard and abandoned. I used to think that an owner dumping his/her dog at the New York Animal Care and Control facility was the least -- and worst -- thing they could do for the dog. I was wrong. |
And, to boot...Brianna was in full blown heat, making her a target for every stray male dog in the Bronx. Thankfully, ACC workers took her to the Manhattan shelter, where she began her transition to her new life. We were able to take Brianna and assimilate her into our foster home system...where there is no joy like a bitch in heat. As the hormonal fluxes raged, she got precious little action out of our pack of neutered males, although my Toot, a Diva Extraordinare, did take great delight in throwing her daily hump into Brianna, within the TV sight line, just for the hell of it. Toot finds endless ways to screw up my Bonanza reruns. | ![]() |

Now, as far as Min Pins go, Brianna is one of a kind. In a breed loaded with attitude, Brianna is as sweet and gentle a dog as we have seen. She is timid at first, but bonds quickly and then looks to her person for leadership. She has blended easily with other dogs and cats, and is always glad to receive human attention. She is extremely well mannered, although, does have some mild separation anxiety, possibly stemming from her schoolyard abandonment. We are in the process of crate training Brianna so that her adopters will have a safe, secure spot with in their home to allow her to relax. |
The big challenges facing Brianna's adopter will be primarily nutritional. She was grotesquely underweight, weighting 12 pounds, when she would be healthy weighing 15 pounds. She is leggy for a Min Pin, and her physique is literally skin and bones. We have put about 1/2 pound on her with healthy diet and added calories. I was ready to order the poor thing a pizza, but opted for a couple extra servings of California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato kibble with added Merrick wet food. | ![]() |

Brianna has obviously been used to breed a few litters of pups, in a "backyard breeding" operation, without concern for American breed conventions. So, she is blissfully uncropped in ears and tail, a look that many Min Pin fans find a more appealing. She will be spayed as soon as her heat season passes and it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we would like to consider adopters for her so that she can go directly into a home after surgery to recover in peace and quiet. She is in excellent health, aside from being underweight. She is up to date on routine shots, has tested negative for heartworm/earlichia/lyme and has been de-wormed for intestinal parasites. |
