ADOPTED |
BENEDICTOur Benedict is a tremendously charismatic and lovable boy! He is full of charm and good humor, but he took a while to come out of his shell. During the thick of the 2020 COVID scourge, Benedict's owner surrendered him to the Brooklyn NY Animal Care Center. He had come into his home as a puppy, but the COVID lockdown offered little opportunity for socializing. |
Undoubtedly, Benedict's owners neglected his basic training, but also failed to understand the needs of a highly active, intelligent Working Breed. As a German Shorthaired Pointer, Benedict needs a lot of exercise and leadership to channel his untapped hunting instincts. Life in a cramped Brooklyn Co-op did not suit him. Benedict suffered during his shelter stay at BACC. He was shut down and frightened, so our shelter contacts sent him to us so he could breathe in the country air. Now at 2.5 years old, Ben has come into his own as a court jester and is ready to bring the giggles to his new home. |
Benedict is a large dog at 80 pounds, with a tendency to snack more often than he should. He is slightly overweight now, and would be ideal at 70 pounds. Adopters should be mindful of his diet and try to maintain normal weight. Benedict is a strong, agile dog who needs a lot of exercise to keep his yayas at bay. |
Benedict is an untapped hunting dog, so his instincts are a mixed bag of gun dog attributes. His ideal adopter would be an active single or couple, who can include Ben on hikes, runs, power walks, camping, or any kind of vigorous activity that will challenge mind and body. He would do well with experienced, confident dog owners, who understand the importance of ongoing discipline and obedience work, and are willing to continue him on his path to Canine good citizenship. He's almost there! |
We have had a blast with Benedict. We've taken him hiking and swimming, and have polished his commands and manners. He really thrives in the outdoors, and has a delightful, impish, playful vibe. Ben is extremely affectionate and revels in any human contact. The more action and exercise that Ben gets, the better. He is not a dog who will be happy relegated to the backyard and ignored. |
Benedict is a superstar in our Big Dog playgroup and could join a multi-dog home with other friendly dogs. We would love to see Ben land in an active adult home with perhaps older kids. Toddlers might not be the best choice of family members for him. He would thrive in a calm, disciplined environment where he can be front and center, and benefit from her adopter's laser focus. Ben's house manners have improved with ongoing training and discipline, but he is not above stealing a shoe or two. He still has a goofy older puppy vibe, and may need a correction or two about jumping up on strangers. |
Ben is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during him transition to a new home. Ben is in optimal health, and is neutered and up to date on routine vaccinations and health screenings. He has been dewormed, and microchipped.
