BELLATRIX

Stunning Bellatrix just knocks our socks off. Six years old, this beautiful, black and tan German Shepherd was found roaming the city streets in Brooklyn, NY, and was escorted to NYCACC by Animal control Officers. When no concerned owners came to claim her, Bellatrix faced the worse possible fate in the overcrowded city pound, and was greenlighted for euthanasia. We jumped at the chance to help Bellatrix find a forever home.

Bellatrix is a lively, vibrant Adult dog, and may well be younger than the shelter estimate. She presents some puppyish energy, and while the condition of her teeth suggest a 6 year old dog, her vibe feels younger. Bellatrix is a powerful, large herding breed dog, and while we cannot piece together her history, it is clear that her former owners had not done any obedience work with her. And, it was obvious that Bellatrix was not getting enough exercise. Our first step in Bellatrix's program was vigorous leash walking, to create a calm, relaxed mind and body ready to accept obedience commands.

Bellatrix has developed beautifully, and now knows most of her basic commands. She is a dream to train, is very eager to please, and responds well to all positive reinforcement techniques. She is praise and treat motivated, so adopters will be able to continue our work easily. Bellatrix could easily work toward her certification in Canine Good Citizenship, if adopters persevere.

Bellatrix would be a good fit for an active single or couple who enjoy the outdoors and can provide for a good amount of exercise. She could also join an active family with older children, but toddlers might not be the best fit for an active, powerful dog. She appears to have a substantial prey drive honed from her time as a survival-oriented stray, so she would not be a good choice for adopters with small dogs or cats. Bellatrix would probably like to have a home of our own, without other dogs, but we wouldn't rule out the right dog chemistry for her.

Bellatrix has good manners and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during Bellatrix's transition to a new home. She is in excellent health, and is at an ideal lean body weight of 65 pounds. She is spayed, and has had a complete dental procedure, in which she only lost one tooth. Her pre-op blood work was within normal limits, and serves as a baseline for adopters in assessing her ongoing Health needs.

Bellatrix has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza), and canine flu. She has been boostered as needed. She has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been dewormed, and microchipped.
