ARES

Our larger than life, Ares is a happy-go-lucky fella, who's burley appearance covers up a sweet, goofy marshmellow!   Five years young, Ares won the heart of absolutely everyone he encountered at NYC ACC. He became a staff and volunteer favorite.  He was surrendered along with his housemate, Anubis, because their owner could not take them along on an upcoming move.

When we heard of Ares' plight, we were happy to invite him, and Anubis, to our Rescue. the boys were surrendered to NYCACC via the Deferred Intake Program, which allowed them to arrive at the shelter on the same day that they could be transported to us. Both dogs seemed good-natured and adaptable during their Intake, and had the natural resilience to be unfazed by chaotic process.

Ares has settled right in and has become a favorite of ours as well.  We have socialized him separately from Anubis, so that they could be adopted more easily.  He's proving to be a real gem and has adapted beautifully to his foster home.  Ares craves human touch and affection, giving as good as he gets.  He  responds well to all types of training, and seems to relish his training regimen. He is extremely eager to please and a very willing student. Ares has the temperament to reach Canine Good Citizen certification.

Ares is a big boy, broad and muscular, with a tendency to gain weight if left to free feed. He appears to be an American Staffordshire Terrier, and embodies all of the best personality characteristics of the breed.  At 58 pounds, Ares is rock solid muscle, but despite his obvious strength, he is remarkably agile and well-behaved on lead.  He has a pearl grey coat with white tuxedo markings, and like many grey coated bully breeds, his sensitive skin benefits from a grain free diet high in quality protein and omega fats.

Ares would be a great choice for a moderately active single or couple or an active recent retiree.  He could easily do well in an apartment lifestyle, and can be trusted home alone for short periods of time.  Ares could join a multi-dog home with another well behaved dog, provided there is proper introduction and supervision. Ares could join an active family with older kids, who have been taught to treat dogs respectfully.

Ares did not arrive with much obedience training, but he is beginning to grasp the basics. He has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained.  Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home. He has been neutered, and has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and Canine Flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
