TUFFY

Our Tuffy is a magnificant coming-of-age athlete born to frolick in the outdoors. He was surrendered to a large Animal Control Facility by an owner who had neither the time, nor the inclination, to manage a large breed puppy. Lovable Tuffy came into the Shelter and, immediately, evaluators noted that he was way behind the learning curve in puppy manners and obedience work. He didn't even know how to walk on a leash! He was passed over for adoption, and we were asked to take him into our Rescue.

Right away, we could see that Tuffy is a goofy, energetic older puppy, who had been sadly understimulated in his former home, that lacked leadership and discipline. Just 10 months old, Tuffy had lived with older kids, and was reported to be a "handful," but his former owners could not find the time to focus on his obedience work or exercise.

Tuffy appears to be an "au naturel" Fawn colored Doberman Pinscher, with undocked floppy ears and tail. The shelter suggested some German Shepherd DNA, but we don't see it. If something is mixed into Tuffy's Dobie genes, it might be a hint of yellow Labrador Retriever. He certainly is a fan of the outdoors and loves to play fetch! His young caretakers, Ali and Jason have had a blast hiking with Tuffy on the trails that crisscross our 85 acre property. He is quite the explorer, loves water, and is an avid rock climber!

Tuffy is a tall, strong athelete with a well muscled physique. He has the proud, confident stance and elongated muzzle that we see in breed standard Dobies. At 63 pounds, Tuffy is a large dog, but can be handled easily on lead now that he has mastered most of his obedience commands. Exercise and obedience work are the keys to channeling Tuffy's puppy mojo. If left alone to become bored and frustrated, Tuffy will become antsy and get into mischief.

Tuffy has great potential to become certified as a Canine Good Citizen, in the hands of motivated adopters. He is best suited to an active adult home, or family with older children, who can all agree on the importance of sufficient exercise and ongoing obedience training. Tuffy loves other dogs, and would be a great addition to a multi-dog home. We have not had him around cats.

Tuffy has decent house manners, but needs consistent discipline and leadership. He is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during Tuffy's transition to a new home. He is in excellent health, and is at an ideal lean body weight of 63 pounds. He has been recently neutered, and has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and Canine Flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, and microchipped.
