SAMWISE

Poor Samwise is suffering from the "Puff the Magic Dragon" syndrome, in that he was left behind in the NYC ACC, after his young owner was deployed into military service. As an Owner Surrender, Samwise was at risk for euthanasia after only 48 hours, so he was quickly rerouted to us, so that we could find him a forever home.

Samwise quickly settled into foster care, where he charmed absolutely everyone! He is an exhuberant, full of life, adult German Shepherd-Rottweiller mix, who still has considerable youthful goofiness at the age of four. Samwise received good behavior evaluations at the shelter, despite his obvious dislike of the austere accomodations.

Samwise has the playful, stalwart and loyal qualities that Rottweiler and Shepherd enthusiasts admire. Both these breeds are powerful ones that owners must take care to socialize and train properly, in order to avoid having boredom and frustration morph into something worse. Samwise has a good nature, is friendly to all, and has the potential to ace his Canine Good Citizenship exam. He has grasped the basics nicely, and will readily respond to the commands of a calm, assertive human leader.

As an active adult dog, Samwise needs a good amount of exercise before he settles down to relax. He would be a good companion for an active single or couple who can commit the time to his training and exercise regimen, or an active family with older kids, who are all on the same page about meeting his needs. Samwise would probably prefer an only dog home, but could likely co-exist with one other well-trained dog, who matches his active energy level. Samwise might be too much of a good thing for cats and toddlers.

Samwise strikes us as a tad behind the learning curve in obedience work, but he is a quick study and willing to learn. He will need some consistency in managing jumping up behavior, and reinforcement of basic obedience commands that he has been taught here. Adopters will have to exercise appropriate patience on potty transition. Samwise is house trained and crate trained, so adopters may use this tool to help him adapt to his new environment.

Samwise is in good health and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza and coronavirus), and has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed and microchipped.
