ADOPTED

RED

Our Red is a stunning dog of impressive stature. This gregarious boy loves everybody, and has an outgoing, friendly personality. Red appears to be a robust, 4 year old Shar Pei/Bully mix, and was recently surrendered to NYCACC, by his owner. Dogs surrendered in this manner have a very short timeline before becoming at risk in city shelters because the process of tracking down an owner is eliminated. They are given only 48 hours to relax enough to qualify for adoption, and, if they do, then they likely catch Kennel Cough, which boots them out of the adoption program.

Red caught the cold, and was released to us so that we could treat him, and find his forever family. Shelter staff were quite impressed with Red's outgoing nature. He completely aced his medical handling evaluation, and he showed no signs of aggression, while under duress in an extremely chaotic environment.

Red recovered from his cold in no time, but once he was back to normal, we noticed ongoing eye inflammation and discharge stemming from from Entropian, a genetic medical condition in which the eyelid folds inward. Red's eyelashes continuously rubbed against his cornea causing irritation that produced thick green mucus. Our Vet performed a simple corrective procedure, and just like that, years of suffering ended.

Red has settled into his foster home beautifully. This lover boy is full of personality, and has charmed everyone he has met. He loves his leash walks and thrives in nature. We have identified a strong prey drive in Red, so he is not a good choice for feline or small dog owners. As a former city dweller, Red is adapting well to country life. It's a joy to watch him revel in the sights and sounds of nature. Birds seem to fascinate him!

As a Shar Pei mix, Red is more outgoing than we would expect from Breed standard dogs. His head shape and wrinkled skin suggest his Shar Pei DNA, but the suspicious Shar Pei personality is tempered with the Bully charisma. Red is a strong, muscular dog and is at a healthy weight of 65 pounds He is fairly easy to handle, and walks well on a loose lead with minimal correction.

This magnificent dog will be a dream come true for an experienced Shar Pei/Bully Breed lover, who has the physical strength to command a powerful dog. We'd describe Red as a medium energy dog, who requires significant daily exercise to remain calm and well behaved. As an owner surrender, Red came to us with good house manners and is house trained and crate trained, although we expect our adopters to troubleshoot the inevitable accidents that may occur during his transition to a new routine.

Red is in excellent health and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). He has had the 4snap test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
