POLANDOur boy Poland was a former resident of the Brooklyn Center for Animal Care and Control, and his plight was brought to my attention by our old friend Martha, who used to be the rescue person at that shelter. I immediately made plans to drive down to pick up Poland, but in the time it took to get down to the car, Martha reported that two more Eskies had turned up, Prince and Princess...a brother - sister duo who had been dumped by their owners. |
The prospect of three CACC Eskies meant that I would have to leave the Angels From God home and pick up a human passenger for extra dog help. I was able to entice my friend Judy Fahey into making the trip by promising her "lunch in Manhattan." Judy had never been on a CACC run before, and chose to dress appropriately for the "lunch" option. When I picked her up, she was sporting a navy blue pantsuit and a mink jacket. I had decided to bring Nadia along for the big car ride and she made sure to plant her share of dog hair on Judy's navy outfit...just so she would look more like a rescue person. We are always careful of the impressions we make at the CACC. |
Poland is thrilled with his evening visit to Manhattan. |
And so, we started off...at 7:00am -- Judy was barely conscious, and I had to plug her full of coffee and Dunkin' Donuts. As we made our way to Brooklyn, Judy got a tour of some of New York's worst neighborhoods. When we finally arrived at the CACC, Martha whisked us back to meet Poland. What a stunner he was. So lily white, gorgeous and friendly. I took him out to the car, while Martha rallied up Prince and Princess. After about 20 minutes, all the dogs were secured in the car...and Judy Fahey was nowhere to be found. |
Martha whispered to me..."Denise, you better collect your friend from the adoption room." Knowing Judy, I gasped and ran in to avert disaster. Sure enough, she turned to me and said, "Do we have room for one more.?" "Well, only if you ride in the trunk, Judy." And then, I looked up to see the object of her desire....and nearly fainted. This was the most unattractive dog I have ever seen...a mix of corgi and chow...that looked more like Pumba, the wart hog in the Lion King. And, he was huge and snarling. But, how could I say no??? |
Prince joined Poland for on the journey from Brooklyn. |
Eskies Online's first kitten rescue... |
I said, "Judy, if you want to adopt a dog, I have just put three of the most gorgeous Eskies in the car...why don't you have a look at those?" But no...Judy wanted the butt-ugly dog -- "But, he's so ugly, he's cute!!" and I began to feel oh so superficial and guilty because ...here was this saint of a woman opening her heart to the soul of the ugliest dog on earth.....and how could I deny this dog a home....I began to re-configure the seating arrangement. Blissfully, Martha came to my rescue...she told us that Chow rescue had already claimed the dog, and he was waiting to be neutered...and so with great disappointment, Judy Fahey moped out to the car, sitting dejectedly in the midst of a pack of absolutely gorgeous dogs. But, not before she managed to adopt a cute little kitty. |
And then, we made our way into Manhattan for "lunch"...by this time, at 6:00pm. And, lunch would not be lunch without Ann Harris.... so after we were blessed with a parking space in front of our Mexican Restaurant, we had a margarita and a nosh before the long trek home.
|
And so, Judy agreed to foster Poland for me....and it was shortly thereafter that she was smitten by Eskieness. Poland has settled right into her home and has attached himself to her son, Eric, and adopted son, Kevin. The alpha bitch lab/rottweiller mix, Midnight, is not a big fan of Poland's, but being an Eskie, Poland can hold his own. |
And, the best thing about Judy adopting Poland is that I get to see him all the time! He is a real pistol...and a true Eskie! |
