ADOPTED

PENNY

Our Penny is a very special girl, indeed. She has recently joined our rescue from a South New Jersey Animal Shelter, where her shy demeanor kept her from connecting with potential adopters. Penny needed a place to decompress and relax, so that she could regain her composure, and begin to enjoy a dog's life again. Penny's owners abandoned this one year old to the local shelter, where she had to re-start her young life as a rescue statistic.

We were thrilled to have Penny join us, but upon arrival, it seemed that we were way more happy to meet her than Penny was to meet us. Penny was terrified and completely shut down. It took a few days for her to relax and relate to handlers, but, slowly she began to warm up. In a short while, Penny became loving and affectionate, but still nervous in new situations. Our mission was to give this doe-eyed ingenue so many positive experiences, that she could reclaim the joy of her puppyhood.

Penny certainly did not project the mighty clueless confidence that we so often see in older puppies. And yet, she has come around beautifully, and is a now a sometimes timid, sometimes happy go lucky, carefree pup. She can be a bit shy when encountering new people and situations, but her tendency is to back away, rather than respond with fearful aggression. Continued patient handling, and strong leadership, will allow Penny to experience the wonders of the world in a positive manner.

Penny is a petite girl, and we guess she has some sighthound in her, most likely Whippet. She weighs just 45 pounds, and may be mixed with a bit of Smooth Coat Collie. She is a medium sized dog, with a willowy athletic physique. She has natural stand up ears and a long tail. Her coat is white based, with patches of caramel colored tan. Her coat is short and easy to groom, although Penny does shed eyelash length hairs.

Penny has become an affectionate sweetheart, who has completely charmed her foster mom. She has done well with other dogs, so Penny could easily join a multi-dog home with other balanced and well-trained dogs to guide her, and help build confidence. Penny is behind the learning curve on basic manners and obedience commands, but she is extremely eager to please and a joy to train. Adopters must be prepared to puppy proof the house, and be diligent in her training and socialization.

Penny has begun to learn the basics of the AKC Canine Good Citizenship program, and we recommend that adopters continue her on this path to build her confidence. She is a medium energy pup, who needs a couple of brisk leash walks, as well as focussed playtime, each day to release her puppy energy.

Penny has good house manners, for an older pup, and is housetrained and crate trained. Adopters should be prepared to troubleshoot the occasional accident that may occur as Penny transitions to her new routine. She is spayed, and has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). She has had the 4snap test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been microchipped and dewormed.
