ADOPTED

LEO

One of the most satisfying aspects of dog rescue is witnessing the profound transformation in spirit from fearful to joyous. Our Leo is a sublime example of just such a transformation. At the age of two, Leo was abruptly dumped by his owners into NYCACC, and the betrayal did not sit well with him. He is a shy boy. and the uncertain chaos of shelter life was more than he could bear.

Leo could not relax and warm up enough to impress his evaluators to put him in the adoption program. Instead, he wound up on the Euthanasia list, and it was down to 5 minutes before "times up," when he came onto our radar. Leo is one of those special boys, whose sad brown eyes revealed a timid soul unsure of his place in the world. When we learned of his plight, we happily invited him to join our rescue, and slowly over the course of the few months, Leo blossomed into a relaxed and affectionate boy.

Leo is thought to be a Red Doberman Pinscher. with natural ears and tail. He has the proud Doberman stance, and elongated muzzle. His Rust-red coat is short, flat and easy to maintain. Leo is a large, strong dog, and is at a healthy weight of 70 pounds. Although Leo his well trained on lead, he requires some physical strength to manage.

Leo strikes us as an insecure boy, who needs ongoing strong leadership to help build his confidence. As a working dog, he will benefit from consistent obedience work to boost his self esteem and give him the sense of purpose that working dogs need to maintain balanced behavior. Leo is best suited to an adult home, with an active single or couple, who have the time to focus on his training needs. He has mastered all of his commands, and adopters should be able to get up to speed with Leo very quickly.

Leo would be a fantastic companion to an active single or couple, who have some experience with shy rescue dogs. Leo is an active dog, and needs a fair amount of exercise and leadership. He is reserved at first, but warms quickly to firm and patient human touch. Leo is easy to handle on lead and tolerant of other dogs. He could easily join a multi-dog home, with one or two calm, well trained dogs. We would like to steer clear of toddlers, because Leo might be spooked by their overzealous attentions.

Leo has not had much obedience training or leadership in his former home, but Leo has been an obedience superstar in our program. He responds well to positive methods, now knows basic commands. and walks well on lead. He seems to enjoy the training, as well as the training treats! Leo is a quick student, eager to please, and responds to both positive reinforcement and leadership techniques. Adopters should continue him on obedience work, not only to foster good behavior, but to give Leo the mental challenge that he needs each day.

Leo has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home. He is in great health and has been neutered. Leo has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and he has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
