LEGGS

Seems as though every couple of weeks, the media reports another awful hoarding situation busted up by the animal control cops. This is the worst kind of situation that rescue folks can face. The dogs that come out of these neglectful environments suffer a myriad of physical and psychological problems.

Our gorgeous girl, Leggs, came to us from just such an unfortunate background. Leggs, and her 20 housemates, were confiscated by local animal control authorities, and transported to the ASPCA Rehabilitation facility in New Jersey. Leggs was riddled with parasites and suffered a long battle with lung worms. She received state of the art veterinary care at the ASPCA facility, where she was diagnosed with Epilepsy, now completely controlled with a daily dose of Phenobarbitol.

Once Leggs was completely healthy, she entered the ASPCA behavior clinic, where behavior experts and trainers, began to restore her spirit and faith in humanity. Slowly, she began to recapture her joie de vivre, and enjoy a carefree dog's life. Leggs graduated from the ASPCA program with top honors, and then we were asked to take her into our Rescue and find her forever home. We are completely smitten with this spunky beauty, who lights up a room when she enters. She has a bewitching smile and has a delightfully mischievious twinkle in her eye, that reveals an inner joy once missing.

Leggs is a FUN dog, who loves to play, but is behind the learning curve in the social skills that young dogs learn in a healthy environment. In some ways, she reminds us of a wild Mustang, whose spirit refuses to be crushed. She has a rambunctious, high energy that needs to be channelled into exercise and ongoing obedience work. She has already mastered many aspects of the Canine Good Citizen program, and is primed to go the distance with the right person.

In a dog world in which most folks seek the "perfect" pal, who will easily assimilate into a bustling lifestyle, no muss...no fuss, Leggs will undoubtedly be passed over in the adoption stampede toward Dixie puppies. We know that Lovely Leggs will attract that one in a million adopter, whose confidence and indomitable spirit will embrace her, and give her the rich life she deserves.

Leggs can be unsure of new people, but warms quickly to tasty treats. She has learned to relax into human touch, and will lovingly bond to her chosen person. Leggs would be the ideal companion for an active single, or couple, who have the patience and passion for helping a rescue dog. As lifelong rescuers, we can attest to the thrill that this kind of connection provides, and the satisfaction that comes with every small measure of progress.

Leggs seems to be a mix of Scent Hounds, most likely Beagle and American Foxhound. She is a graceful, medium sized dog, and is at an ideal weight of 30 pounds. The key to a positive connection with Leggs is exciting her scent hound instincts. Leggs comes alive in the brisk country air, where she can indulge her snoot. She would love to join her people on a brisk walk, run or hike, and has lots of stamina to keep up. She also enjoys a leasurely stroll, during which she can take in the scents of nature.

Leggs has good house manners and is housetrained. She's not a big fan of her crate, but she tolerates it, if bribed with a treat or interesting toy. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident as Leggs adjusts to her new lifestyle. She enjoys car travel, but would be best restrained by a safety harness to prevent her from back seat driving.

Leggs is in excellent health at six years old, and is completely vetted. She is spayed, up to date on routine vaccinations, dewormed, and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. All medical issues have been treated, and we are offering free post adoption obedience training to local adopters.
