JULIUS

Our handsome guy Julius is a very elegant gentleman. His Redbone Coonhound good looks suggest Southern hunting dog roots, but in Manhattan? Well, stranger things have happened. Julius came to us recently, after spending some time at NYC ACC. He was found by Animal Control Officers during his evening constitutional, and was promptly carted off to the city shelter.

Julius caught the shelter kennel cough early on, and was brought to our attention, as soon as his stray hold was lifted. We could not resist Julius, and immediately invited him to our Rescue. We are suckers for a pair of big brown eyes. Julius held his own in the shelter environment, which can terrify some dogs. He was initially reported to be shy and timid, and it seemed that the chaos and uncertainty of his situation left him rattled. After unwinding a bit with shelter staff and volunteers, Julius received positive behavior evaluations and, he came out of his shell as soon as he arrived here. Julius seems to crave human contact, and loves a lot of attention. Once shy and reserved, he has now has blossomed into a fun loving pup.

Julius appears to be primarily a stunning Redbone Coonhound. He is a substantial, muscular dog at 41 pounds, slightly smaller than breed standard Coonhounds, so there may be a little bit of Beagle mixed in. Julius could stand to gain a few pounds, and would be at an ideal weight in the 45 to 50 pound range. His short, flat coat is russet red, and requires minimal grooming. Julius has a lean, leggy physique, with a proud stance, and all of the wonderful attributes of a Scent Hound.

Julius would be the ideal choice for an active single or couple, who's lifestyle allows for him to participate front and center. He would probably do best in a quiet and calm environment, with folks who would allow him time to warm up slowly and investigate his new surroundings at his own pace. While he is a loving and sweet dog, it seems that when faced with so much daily chaos, Julius could become a wallflower instead of a shining Superstar. Julius craves a strong human connection and would thrive in a home with fewer dogs and people, so that he could enjoy the Limelight. His ideal situation would be a quiet, laid back home with perhaps one other calm, well-trained dog, or cat.

We sense some shyness in Julius' delicate nature. We have focussed on confidence building by activating his Scent Hound instincts. He enjoys leisurely walks where he can take in nature, but he can quickly adapt to a jogging pace. Julius is an active dog who needs mental and physical stimulation. He has a moderate energy level, and would make a great walking or running companion. He would be a great addition to camping or hiking trips. The time he spends outdoors seems to thrill him.

Julius has progressed nicely on his obedience training, and he has the potential to reach Canine Good Citizen certification. He's already passed many of the tests, and has learned his basic obedience sequence. Julius is very treat motivated and easy to train. He may become occasionally distracted by the random scents of nature, but he redirects nicely, and seems to enjoy his training sessions. Ongoing focus on obedience training, will provide Julius leadership and mental stimulation that he needs to thrive.

Julius has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained, but Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home. Julius is in good health and has recently been neutered. He has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
