ADOPTED

HOUDINI

Our handsome Houdini has experienced a very sad state of affairs. He was purchased as a holiday gift 10 years ago, and life was good...until one day it wasn't. Houdini's owner ran into some bum luck, and without much explanation, dumped him, and his lifelong housemate, Hondo, into a high risk kill shelter. Owner surrendered dogs only have 48 hours to wow shelter staff, who may put them on the adoption track, network them to Rescue groups or shortlist them to oblivion.

Even though Houdini had good behavior evaluations, he was passed over in the Shelter adoption program because of his age. Seems as though everybody wants to experience puppy hell, and too few people appreciate the considerable benefits of having an older dog, who is well past the puppy mayhem stage.

Houdini adapted to shelter life without much trouble. He seemed appropriately nervous and shaken, but willing to go with the flow. When we learned of his situation, the clock was ticking and he was out of options. We were thrilled to have him join us. Houdini has settled in nicely, and has become one of our favorite snugglers. This beautiful boy deserves to live his golden years in the lap of luxury and love.

Houdini has a calm and mellow nature, and the shelter experience left him befuddled, but still craving human connection. He came to us with a shy, slightly skiddish demeanor that suggested years of sheltered living. Houdini reportedly lived with four adults, and his housemate Hondo, but still seems slightly surprised by new faces and places.

Houdini is thought to be a mix of Border Collie and American Foxhound. He is a medium sized dog, weighing 38 pounds, and has a short, flat, easy to groom coat, with black and white markings. He seems more like a Hound in personality, in that he prefers leisurely strolls that allow him to explore nature, rather then energetic sprints that we expect of Border Collies. He would be a great choice for a moderately active single or couple, a recent retiree or senior. Houdini would be happy with a couple of pleasant leash walks daily, and an occasional gentle game of frisbee.

Houdini enjoys other dogs, and would thrive in a multi-dog home with good natured, relaxed dogs. He would also be a wonderful companion for an active senior dog, who may have lost his or her housemate. He is quite comfortable with his lifetime buddy, Hondo, who is also available. They can be adopted together, but have been socialized widely to go their separate ways. We have not had him around cats, but he could do well with proper supervision.

Houdini could do well in an apartment lifestyle, and, as an older dog, he can be trusted home alone for short periods of time. He is a pretty good all-around companion dog, and needs to be in an environment where his golden years will be spent as the light of someone's life, rather than considered an afterthought.

Houdini had not had much obedience training, but he has quickly mastered the basics. He has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home.

Houdini is in excellent health, has been neutered, and had a full dental procedure will complete bloodwork. His blood chemistries were normal and provide a baseline going forward. He has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and Canine Flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
