GINGERSNAP

Talk about your Cinderella stories! Poor Gingersnap came to us from NYC ACC last month, looking like somebody had used her for a mop head. She had been a city stray for so long that her, no-doubt-once-cute coiffure had morphed into a Cousin-It-for-Halloween look.

There was no bereaved owner to claim Gingersnap, so she was slated for the euthanasia list, despite excellent behavior ratings, because she caught a cold and could not be adopted out from the shelter. She was rerouted to our rescue so that we could give her time to heal, and evaluate her behavior on friendlier turf.

Gingersnap, arriving from the shelter

Gingersnap is a movie star mix of fluffball tiny breeds, but seems to be primarily Maltese, as reported by the shelter. She also favors the West Highland White Terrier, and seems to have the corresponding plucky, confident temperament. Her natural coat is wavy and long, but was thoroughly matted, so we had her groomed to a short puppy cut. Her coat has a slight wave to it and she seems to be low shedding. Gingersnap will require a couple of professional grooming visits each year, and as our groomer reported, she is easy to handle and seems to enjoy the spa process!

Gingersnap is an extremely friendly little Diva, once she has been given time to approach on her own terms. She may take exception to the occasional stranger, who pushes their affections on her before she is ready.

Gingersnap would be a great companion to an active single or couple, who have alot of time for her. She becomes very bonded to her people and loves to be close by. Once she's comfortable in her surroundings, she shows quite a charming play vibe. She is happy to chase a ball and romp in the yard, but then cuddle up for a nap once playtime is done.

Gingersnap enjoys canine company, and is an equitable housemate. She shares her Foster Dad's lap with a cantankerous chihuahua, Tank, who would try the patience of a Mahatma Ghandi. Gingersnap is one eloquent negotiator.

Gingersnap could easily join a multi-dog home, and may be ok with cats. She tends to bark initially, with disbelief, but can be encouraged to settle down for the long haul. Proper introduction and training could foster peaceful feline relations, but adopters should have the patience and persistence to weather the initial storm.

Three years old, Gingersnap is a bit behind the curve in her obedience work. Obviously, she has been neglected for some time, so adopters would be wise to follow a basic obedience course to keep her in balance, and in touch with her glorious canine roots. Gingersnap is very eager to please and responsive to training techniques.

Gingersnap has great house manners and is housetrained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident as she transitions to a new routine. She has been spayed, and has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). She has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been microchipped and dewormed.
