CHESSIE

Our delightful dowager, Chessie, has all the buoyant and irrepressible spirit of a canine unsinkable Molly Brown. Chessie had been a free wheelin' city stray before Animal Control Officers brought her to NYCACC, where the chaos of shelter life couldn't put a damper on her magnanimous personality.

Chessie is a joyous character, who brings her sense of humor to every situation. I don't think we have ever before seen a dog turn a Vet visit into a rollicking good time. She turned the invasive "poke and prod" session into an absolute lovefest. Chessie is that one in a million dog who navigates change effortlessly, unburdened by fear.

Chessie is a Labrador Retriever with some measure of Border Collie in her DNA. At the age of eight, Chessie is an active girl, and quite athletic, considering her zaftig physique. Now 80 pounds, she could easily lose 10 pounds to be at ideal weight. Chessie' s short black coat has pronounced white markings on her muzzle, chest and feet. She is easy to bathe, and really enjoys the grooming process.

As an older gal, Chessie is well past that maddening, hyperactive Border Collie youngster phase. Her ideal situation would be a home in which she could spend her retirement as a shining Superstar. We would like to see her lavished with attention and love. She is the ideal companion dog, and prefers to relax in the company of her special person. She would do well with either an active single or couple, or retiree who enjoys a couple of brisk leash walk daily. Her needs are very minimal, but she definitely needs a loving environment for her golden years.

As a spritely senior, Chessie is way past the puppy destructive years, and would be a good choice for apartment living. She's not overly reactive to sounds, and doesn't seem to bark much. She may well be the ideal companion to another senior dog who recently lost their beloved housemate. She could do well in a family with older children, but toddlers may not be the best fit, as their overzealous attentions can spook laid-back dogs.

Chessie has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during her transition to a new home. Chessie is in good health and has recently been spayed, and has had a full dental. Her pre-op bloodwork was normal, and she has many great quality of life years left. Chessie can be a chow hound, so adopters should watch her weight, and make sure she gets exercise each day.

Chessie is spayed and has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and Canine Flu. She has been boostered as needed. She has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
