ASTRO

Our Astro is one of the happiest canine characters that we've encountered in sometime. Just five years old, he came to us from a small town shelter where his owner had dumped him. Not even such a grave betrayal could put the damper on Astro's outgoing personality. He charmed the shelter staff and quickly earned himself an invitation to our country bumpkin Rescue.

We were thrilled to have Astro join us. Immediately, he began to blend into our active multi-dog home. He showed himself to be a confident, outgoing, good natured dog, who is very adaptable to change. We saw no signs of "shelteritis" or trauma in Astro. He's simply a happy-go-lucky, cockeyed canine optimist, ready for life's next great adventure.

Astro appears to be a stunning Chesapeake Bay Retriever, a breed that is characterized by a rich, reddish brown, slightly curly coat. The Chesapeake is not often found in Rescue. Astro seems pretty close to breed standard in appearance. He is a tall, strong, slightly chubby former athlete, bred for outdoor retrieving action. At 65 pounds, he is a large dog, who seems a little pudgy. He would benefit from moderation in a healthy diet and increased exercise in his new home.

Astro would be be a fantastic companion to an active single or couple, or family with older kids. Astro loves attention and will not play favorites in the family circle. He's the kind of dog who will welcome family and friends into his adopters home, and he doesn't present much "stranger danger" behavior.

The ideal lifestyle for Astro would be an active one, filled with outdoor adventures that take advantage of his Retriever nature. Astro needs an adopter who wants a deep connection. He is not the kind of dog who would thrive if abandoned to a fenced yard or pen, as an afterthought. Astro is an extremely sociable boy, who needs people! He wants to participate in life, not sit by the sidelines. He would be much happier on a brisk leash walk, run or hike than wasting away in a back yard. Any games or activities that connect Astro to his instincts will allow him to live his best life.

Astro could easily join a multi-dog home, with other confident, well trained dogs, and he may do well with dog savvy cats, if the adopters have experience managing a cat/dog household. He would do well in the experienced hands of active adults, whose lifestyle supports Astro's exercise and training needs. He has excelled at obedience work, and now knows all his commands. Adopters will have the tools in place to communicate with him immediately.

Astro has excellent housemanners and is housetrained and crate trained, although adopters must expect the occasional accident to occur during Astro's transition to a new routine. He is an excellent health and has been fully vet checked. He has been neutered and vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed.
