ADOPTED

ASSATA

Our Assata is an impossibly cute, cuddly little girl. Three and a half years old, she was surrendered to NYCACC by an anxiety-ridden owner, who was battling a bevy of petsonal problems. Despite her abrupt uprooting, Assata seemed to fare well in the shelter and remained gentle and sweet in demeanor.

After a few days in the shelter environment, Assata began to show signs of depression, so our shelter contacts rerouted her to our rescue for some TLC. Our hope for Assata was that she could unwind in a friendlier environment, and we could better evaluate her true nature before adoption. We were delighted to snatch up this beauty, so that we could find her a forever home.

It's a shocker that Assata should wind up homeless and alone at her young age. Shelter staff pegged her as a mix of Havanese and Shih Tzu. We're not quite sure about her breed mix, but we're darn sure there's a whole lot of Cuteness going on. Assata is a total love, with real lap dog potential. She doesn't seem to have the over the top energy that we see in some small breeds. Instead, Assata approaches cautiously, and waits for an invitation to smother her person with kisses! She is an affectionate girl who bonds quickly once she trusts.

At 7 pounds, Assata is a petite beauty, with a thick cream-colored coat accented with black markings on her muzzle and ear tips. Her shortened muzzle makes a case for Shih Tzu DNA. Assata's coat is soft, fluffy, and will require professional grooming a few times a year.

Assata would be a great choice for an active single or couple who enjoy an medium energy tiny companion dog. She would be an enthusiastic companion on walks or hikes, and she loves to travel, and be part of the action. Assata could also join an active family with older kids, who have been taught to handle small dogs respectfully. We would like to steer clear of toddlers because they may overwhelm her. The key to Assata is adequate exercise and mental stimulation to keep her from wallowing in the boredom and frustration that leads to behavior problems.

Assata is a social girl, and could easily join a home with other well trained, energetic dogs. We have not exposed her to cats, but she is mild mannered enough to co-exist with them. She has begun to grasp the basics of leadership and obedience work, and has passed a few of the Canine Good Citizen tests. Assata has the potential to excel in this program.

Assata is in excellent health, and has been recently spayed. We have identified a few allergies and food sensitivities, and have switched her to a limited ingredient food which has resolved all of her symptoms. She has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). She has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been microchipped and dewormed.
